Outsourcing revisited..

Posted by Aric on March 24th, 2004

Yeah, I’m just a wild man today.. 3 posts in one day.. woohoo! Anyhow.. I read this BusinessWeek article on Yahoo News.. it pretty much sums up the outsourcing situation and what can/should be done about it.. the title of the article is “One Giant Global Labor Pool?”.. and that’s pretty much what it is.. the author talks about “salary equilibrium” and how outsourcing could weigh on US salaries and even standard of living. He has some interesting numbers and facts in the article, I read it earlier today, you can read it now.. I’m not going to regurgitate it here.. but in the end, he/she says this:

How can the U.S. avoid that? It can’t entirely because globalization has a life of its own. But striving to keep American workers ahead of the pack would help. To achieve that, federal and state governments as well as Corporate America must put a much stronger focus on education and training. The U.S. has been struggling to improve its kindergarten through 12th-grade schooling for years, with only middling success so far. Plenty more needs to be done, especially for smart kids from lower-income families who still often don’t get the educational and social support they need to succeed in school.

And thats really about it.. for years, the US had the most skilled and most educated labor force.. and now, other countries are catching up. If the US doesn’t stay ahead, then we will get left behind. In my “circle”, its a pretty well-known fact that Japanese cars are generally better made than American made cars. We choose to purchase Japanese or German cars because American made cars for a variety of reasons.. style, quality, reliability, etc. So what should the government do? Should they say that US citizens are not allowed to purchase imported vehicles? or should it be the responsibility of the American car company to improve quality, style, and reliability or risk being forced out of the market?

Sennheiser MX500 earphones..

Yeah, its not really technology.. but I was so surprised at the quality of sound that I had to write about it somewhere.. but yes, I finally got a pair of good earphones.. I’ve had tons of earphones, usually some pair that was thrown in with some kind of audio device.. CD player, MP3 player, whatever.. I must have hundreds of earphones sitting around. Being that I’m from the era of “ol’ skewl bass”, the bigger the driver/speaker, the better. So I was pleasantly surprised with the Sennheiser MX500s.. I’ve read a lot of good things about them, but I never imagined that such a small speaker could produce decent sound. The highs are present and the lows, surprisingly, are also represented. I had a pair of those flimsy Panasonic headphone things with the foam pads that I figured must sound better than any earphones.. but I was wrong. They also come with a little inline volume control for those times when you can’t reach the main volume. It also comes with one of those wind-up protective cases.

ShopNBC.com sucks..

Posted by Aric on March 24th, 2004

I think the title prety much says it all.. ShopNBC.com sucks.. their customer service sucks.. they’re the only business on the internet that I know of that cannot cancel an order even though the item I purchased was on back order and still has not shipped. They also lack the ability to change the shipping address, the shipping address that their screwed up order form messed up. I’ve sent 2 emails and made 3 phone calls to customer service. Each CSR gave me a different answer. ShopNBC is an example of why CSRs should be outsourced. If you’re a CSR and you’re doing a crappy job, then your company might as well give your job to India.. at least they’ll save money.

While I’m writing about stuff that sucks, I just wanted to add my little tidbit again that Abeam Consulting sucks.. as soon as this project is over, I’m going to add “Ruin life of Abeam consultant” to my list of hobbies.. in talking to more of the locals yesterday, I realized that everyone that has ever come in contact with this prick hates him.
