Now This Is Geek Funny..

Posted by Aric on May 7th, 2004

Here’s something I documented a while back.. I thought it was hilarious when it happened.. but after I finished writing it.. it didnt seem so funny.. so I read it again today and its funny again.. so I better publish it before I think its not funny again..

Ok, so I was trapped in a 6 hour meeting.. you know, the kind with too many damn people in it to ever come to a
conclusion on anything with occasional outbursts of completely unrelated issues.. I guess it wasn’t a total waste though.. because we heard issues that we’ve never heard during our 6.5 months here.. interesting.. anyhow.. so we were in a conference tomb that was being used for some training classes and such.. so there were computers set up on the conference table.. under the guise of looking up something in SAP, I was hard at work on my practical joke.. I’m surprised I never thought of it before.. I’m sure its been done before by many others, but its a novel idea to me.. anyhow, I first opened a few windows in Windows.. then I took a screen shot of the desktop.. next, I replaced the existing desktop wallpaper with my screenshot, then I made some strategic icon moves and took another screenshot.. replaced the wallpaper with the latest screenshot.. the result? two open windows that can never be closed and about two dozen desktop icons that can’t be used.. additionally, there were a total of three “SAP Logon” icons with only one being the real one.. he’s a screenshot of my ‘screenshot wallpaper’..

Here's an early iteration..

Here’s my first wallpaper.. couldn’t get to the computer again to get the final wallpaper.. but you get the idea..

While I was sitting there, admiring my work.. one of the local IT guys came by to ask me what was going on in the meeting.. I told him I was having problems with the ‘My Computer’ icon.. and then I told him my ‘Internet Explorer’ wouldn’t open.. he took command of the mouse.. he kept clicking on the icons, tried to close the open windows, etc etc.. he finally agreed, “yes, there is something wrong! I’ve never seen this before!”.. I regained control of the mouse and showed him my ‘Desktop Properties’.. it took him a while to realize what he was looking at.. but he finally figured out.. next step, delete all the real icons from the desktop.. get rid of the task bar.. that’ll be good  ..

UPDATE 05/11/04: Found out today, someone reinstalled Windows.. probably thought the Desktop was jacked up
