Blitz Racing Nissan Skyline R34

Well, since there has been no Canon EOS 40D announced at PMA (yet, fingers crossed), I figure I’d post a picture (you guys probably didnt think I actually shot pictures, huh?).

This image was shot during the NASCAR vs D1: “Drift vs Grip” exhibition promoted by Kasey Kahne for his charity foundation. This was back in August 31st 2006, but its one of my favorite pictures.

Its not as (consistently) sharp as it could’ve been, but thats probably due to the combination of:

. shallow depth of field due to being forced to shoot at f2.8
. shooting at ISO1250 or 1600, maybe 3200.. too lazy to look it up, but it was Noise Ninja’ed.. or maybe it was Noiseware Pro’ed..
. shooting at 1/100 shutter because thats all I could muster given the poor night time lighting at Irwindale

In any case, its one of my favorite, thus far..

I posted this using the “Blog This Photo” feature on Flickr.. pretty cool.. maybe I’ll make more use of it in the future..
EDIT: Photo was shot at ISO1600, 70mm, 1/100, noise reduction by Noiseware Pro in Photoshop CS2, cropped

Here’s a pic of the American Idol Season 3 contestant.. I looked up her name, but now I forgot it and am too lazy to look it up.. she’s puttin’ on her game face before singing the American anthem

Hulk Hogan @ Formula D

Hulk Hogan.. I think he was looking at me because I was flashing gang signs at him .. he really sounded like what he sounds like on TV and he was a pretty big guy.. he doesn’t look bad for being 53 years old..

All pictures were taken with my Canon 20D and Ed’s Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM or Ed’s Canon 20D and Ed’s Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM.. pictures were all cropped, shrunk, sharpened, leveled and whatever else I could do to make the pictures look better (with the exception of major sharpening artifacts.. but who’s looking, right?) and then saved at ~30% quality..

It was an OK event.. there werent that many good picture taking spots.. you probably noticed lots of the pics I took were of the back of the car, almost.. it was because that was the only “open area” (no fence) where you could take panning shots.. by the time the car was ending that wide sweeping turn, the back of the car was facing the “good spot”.. also the section of the Long Beach Grand Prix they used for the drift course was relatively slow.. about 60-65MPH, max.. compare that to Irwindale where they’re going like 90-95MPH on the bank.. it kind of sucks that D1 and Formula D only hit up So Cal twice per year and G4TV won’t be broadcasting the Long Beach event until June 18th or something like that.. man, listen to me.. I’m like a drifting event junkie..

I’m heading to the IDRC season opener at Palmdale tomorrow to shoot some pics.. hopefully I’ll get some good Skyline GTR shots from the Skyline Shootout..

On another note, I got my Canon 30D on Friday.. but I’ll talk about that later when I run out of car stuff to talk about..

Peak Performance Nissan 240SX S14

This week, I had some spare time so I was hanging out at Dynamic Autosports and watched as the guys wrenched on the Peak Performance 240SX S14 in preparation for D1GP at Irwindale on March 4th.. the car started up Tuesday night.. but it wasnt until Wednesday night until they started tuning.. unfortunately, I had to get up to go to work on Thursday, so I couldn’t stay for the show.. but I managed to snap a few pics before I left.. the guys from XS Engineering were there prepping their Nissan Skyline R32 GTR for Modified Magazine’s Time Attack at California Speedway on March 5th so I got a few of them “in action”..

Dynamic Autosports took the Peak Performance Nissan 240SX S14 down to Irwindale today for some test laps and tech inspection.. Robbie Nishida of Falken will be driving the car this season, so it was his first time behind the wheel.. I heard he was pleasantly surprised with the car.. I heard he kept repeating, “this car is amazing.. this car is amazing..”.. I guess he really liked the 2.4 liter SR20 with the HKS sequential trannie..

Here are a few pics.. unfortunately bandwidth doesnt grow on trees, so I resized the images and saved them at 30% quality.. most of the pics were shot at ISO1600 or 3200.. cleaned up with Noise Ninja 2, sharpened (USM) with Photoshop CS2..

XS Engineering Nissan Skyline R32 GTR

A front shot of the XS Engineering Nissan Skyline GTR R32.. they were corner balancing the car in preparation for the Modified Magazine Time Attack.. you G4TV viewers may recognize the car from the Street Tuner Challenge TV show.. the car is insane in real life.. the Nissan Skyline GTR R32 has still got to be one of the most aggressive looking cars.. ever..

DSport’s Nissan Skyline GT-R

After class, I drove down to DSport to hang out while they worked on the D1 event program. I brought along my camera gear because I was hoping there’d be something to shoot.. anyway, while I was there, I went back to Mike’s house to pick up his Nissan Skyline R33 GT-R.. we drove back in it, but since it never warmed up, he never got on it.. I was really suprised at how loud the Hollinger transmission is though.. he just put it back together, but last week he took it up to Palmdale (LACR) to run some quarter miles.. on his first pass, he ran a 9.97 with a 1.85 sixty foot (he normally launches with 1.60 60-foots).. anyhow, after that 9 second pass, he wasn’t allowed to run anymore because he didnt have a certified roll cage.. prior to taking it to the track, he tuned it on XS Engineering’s dyno.. 879whp at about 3 bar.. since he’s running a 2.8 liter now, the peak torque increased a lot and came on about 600 RPM sooner.. also, at about 6k RPM, horsepower was increased by about 200whp.. pretty impressive.. you can read all about it in the next issue though..

Anyway, I shot some pics while I was there.. both to show Mike that Canon’s high ISO performance is pretty impressive and just to mess around with my camera.. when I told him I was going outside to shoot some pics, he said, “in the dark?” and I said, “yeah.. ISO3200, baby”.. here’s the shot.

This was shot with my Canon 20D and Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens (ISO3200, 1/20, f/3.5, handheld, no flash, USM in CS2)

Here’s a crop of the sky with a part of the Skyline’s windshield in it to show you where its cropped from..

iso3200

After that, I went inside and grabbed Mike’s tripod and shot a few on the tripod.. not that impressed, but its OK, I guess..

Anyways.. that’s about it.. tomorrow, I’m heading down to Dynamic Autosports to see what I can shoot there.. Ed’s Peak Performance S14 is being prepped for D1 on March 3rd.. I think his new driver is a dude from Japan, Robbie Nishida with Falken.. I’ll post more pics later..
